Choosing Nursing Homes

Finding long-term care for loved ones can be a stressful process, especially when you hear regular stories about the neglect and abuse of patients in nursing homes. Many nursing homes, however, provide a safe environment where residents receive care with dignity, skill and love.

Before making a decision about a care facility, set up a meeting with administrative staff members. Remember to ask the following questions as you evaluate available nursing homes in your community.

  1. Are residents given daily assistance with hygiene and personal chores like dressing and eating?
  2. Do the nursing homes have staff physicians who can attend to acute illnesses like colds, flu and other infections?
  3. What scheduled activities are offered for residents? Are there game nights, movie nights or dining socials? Will residents have regular opportunities for social interaction, if they wish to participate?
  4. Are residents required to share rooms? If not, what is the cost difference for an individual room?
  5. How often do residents in nursing homes receive clean laundry, towels and linens?
  6. What are the emergency and fire procedures within the facility? How will staff members ensure the safety of all residents?
  7. Is there a special wing for patients struggling from dementia, Alzheimer’s or other mental deficits? Are they provided with one-on-one assistance to and from meal times, therapy sessions, etc.?
