The psychosocial and mental health considerations of a quarantine: What exactly do we need to care plan?

The psychosocial and mental health considerations of a quarantine: What exactly do we need to care plan?  Presented by Stephanie Goldstein BSW, LBSW.  In the midst of this mass hysteria, both personally and professionally, we need to focus on the effects this quarantine has on our residents/clients. From a psychosocial and mental health perspective, there are serious concerns. While trying to maintain some sense of normality, everyone is working hard to keep their head above water. Yet, it is still essential to assess the seniors' mental health status as they experience separation from loved ones, the loss of freedom, uncertainty over disease status, and boredom. This program will offer insight into the resident/client experience so the best individualized care plans can be developed.  Jenerations Health Education, #1494, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. North American Indigenous People and Imperial Expansion since 1815 with Alan Perry

Class Fee: $30 Zoom Class on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 11:30am, January 19 thru February 23 This is a continuation and expansion of the “To 1815” courses offered by SPARK over the last year. The course will examine the relationships of Native Americans and Canadian First Nations with their respective national (or imperial?) governments – and with the settlers and corporations that continued to move West and North. Equally important, we will examine the internal adjustments made by native people in reaction to the advance of EuroAmerican and Euro-Canadian cultural and military power. We will look at several specific tribes and confederations, including the Cherokee and the Sioux, as well as Canadian Cree and the Me’tis people involved in the 19th Century Riel Rebellions. Who are the Me’tis? Take the course and find out! There will be a good deal of discussion of the evolution of American and Canadian policy, including the establishment of reservations and reserves, the rise and demise of boarding schools and the “Indian New Deal” We will also consider American continental expansion as a prelude and warmup for American expansion overseas, which effectively began in 1893. Why 1893? Take the course and find out! There will be several short articles for reading and in-class discussion. Instructor: Dr. Alan Perry shares with us his knowledge, experience and a life-long enthusiasm for history. Dr. Perry graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand with degrees in history. He served over 15 years as Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and taught history at Park University in Kansas City. He also has served as an Archivist for the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC, the Virgin Islands and Kansas City.

Harry S. Truman – 33rd President of the United States Truman’s “Second Term”, Part 2 (October 1950 – January 1953) with David Jeter

Class Fee: $30 Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00pm, January 21 thru February 25. On January 20, 1949, Harry Truman was sworn in as President, having been elected the previous November in his own right. That date initiated his “Second Term” as President of the U.S.A. In our previous series we explored the period from his inauguration up through the first few months of the Korean Conflict (June to October of 1950). This series will explore that portion of Truman’s “Second Term” as President from late summer of 1950 to his departure from office in January of 1953.Topics we’ll explore in this series: Truman’s seizure of the railroads; the “Korean Conflict” beginning with October of 1950 through the end of Truman’s presidency; Puerto Rican Nationalist’s assassination attempt; Truman’s dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander of the U.N. forces in Korea; the spying trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; Truman’s attempted nationalization of the Steel Industry; the reconstruction of the White House; the election of 1952 and Truman’s departure from office and return to civilian life in Independence, Missouri.Come join us as we (hopefully) conclude our study of the Presidency of Harry S. Truman, “The Man from Independence”. Instructor: David Jeter is a retired attorney, who practiced in Blue Springs for nearly 35 years. He received his undergraduate degree in history and his law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, earning his J.D. in 1973. He considers himself an amateur historian with wide-ranging interests. He is a docent at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum and has undertaken to continue to learn as much as he can about the life and times of President Truman and those forces which influenced him as he served as the 33rd President of the United States from 1945 – 1953.

Exercises, meditation, diet, supplements and relaxation techniques will blend evidence-based Western neuroscience with best-practices to improve and restore vitality, while focusing on stress reduction and overall well-being. Instructor: Leslie Van Grove is a hearing-impaired individual with intimate understanding of the challenges that coincide in living with hearing loss or social isolation.
