Free Beginner Zoom Tai chi Classes

Introduction to T'ai Chi (& Qi Gong): Getting Started Right   Free Zoom Classes With several more months of restricted activities due to the pandemic, Joe Brady and Jacqui Shumway of The Tai Chi Project have decided to offer free Tai Chi Classes for Beginners via Zoom on Fridays at 10:00am Mountain Standard Time. Description: Experience for yourself the accumulated wisdom of centuries with the timeless exercise of T’ai Chi - many of the best of Qi Gong exercises artfully strung together. Improve your health and balance, feel more energy, and so you can sleep better. Learn to use your T’ai Chi to alleviate chronic stress, and everyday aches and pains. Step out of the ordinary and take the first steps on the road to a healthy longevity.  The flowing meditative exercise of T’ai Chi can be a powerful complement to medical intervention, and in many instances, may allow a physician to significantly reduce a patient's drug dosage or eliminate the need for medication altogether. Get the benefits of exercise you need without the wear and tear of other forms of exercise.  “T’ai Chi is often described as "meditation in motion," but it might well be called "medication in motion." There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.” Harvard Medical School

Join Kathi Miracle as she describe these common behaviors and shares her tips to pro-active care that will drastically reduce the incidence of these behaviors. Understanding the person and how to read their signs and knowing how to work around this can keep everyone’s stress down. Learn why behaviors happen, how to work around this and better care for someone with dementia. Webinar link will be provided upon completion of registration.   ABOUT BALFOUR SENIOR LIVING MEMORY CARE Nothing takes a higher priority at Balfour  Senior Living's memory care communities than treating every resident with the deference, dignity, and attention he or she deserves. We emphasize strengths, abilities and keeping things positive. It begins by recruiting and retaining experienced staff. Intensive training for all staff along with monthly in-service programs creates an environment of learning and interest. Our care partners are trained in validation approaches, encouraging interaction with residents in the most effective and caring way possible. Equally important is maintaining strong communication between our care partners and the families of our residents. Our regular care meetings and educational and family council gatherings create a collaborative caring environment for residents and families. We offer programming that helps stimulate long-term memories and increase enjoyment of the moment, including pet therapy, massage, and aromatherapy. Reminiscing and sensory activities draw on our residents’ strengths, allowing them to reflect and talk about themselves. Our care partners meet our residents where they are – in their world and in their time.     ABOUT THE SPEAKER Kathi Miracle Balfour at Cherrywood Village, Executive Director Kathi’s career has spanned more than 20 years working with seniors in multiple leadership capacities.  Her passion and expertise is to care for those who have been diagnosed with some form of dementia and to support and educate family members who now find themselves on a new journey. Kathi served as a member of the board of directors for Connections for Independent Living, RVNA Home Health,  Eldergarden Adult Day Care and the Colorado Assisted Living Association as their Education Coordinator. In July 2007 she was published in the National Association of Insurance Women magazine on proper long-term care planning.  She has spent time as part of the speakers’ bureau for the Alzheimer’s Association in Denver, as well as a candidate for Governor Hickenlooper’s Committee on Aging for the State of Colorado. Kathi has presented at various conferences within the United States and has been asked to speak internationally on the topic of dementia.  She has completed over 500 presentations and trainings regarding the topic of dementia and other related areas of aging.  She has created various training programs for both assisted living residences and home care and is an approved consultant by the State Health Department for Assisted Living Residences in Colorado. Kathi holds a master’s degree in Gerontology with an emphasis in dementia and elder abuse; and a double bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology, all from the University of Northern Colorado.   For more information about Balfour Senior Living, click here.

Funeral Consumer Protection Presentation

For those of you who are not familiar with the Funeral Consumer Society of Colorado and what we offer, we are considered to be “the best one-stop source of consumer information about funerals and cremations in Colorado”.  This is an invitation to see what we are up to, listen to an informative talk by Josh Slocum, Executive Director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance, and consider joining our board as we reach out to help consumers make educated choices when making what is often the third largest purchase of their lives.  MAY 1st ANNUAL FCSC MEETING Bringing Consumer Protection into the 20th Century presented by Josh Slocum, Executive Directive, Funeral Consumers Alliance; 10:00 a.m. The funeral consumer movement picked up steam in the 1960s with the formation of a network of memorial societies (today's Funeral Consumers Alliance). Our biggest achievement was helping enact 1984's "Funeral Rule," the FTC regulation giving consumers the right to transparent pricing and freedom of choice in buying funerals. It's time for an update. We'll talk about the coalition of consumer groups, led by FCA, that is asking the Federal Trade Commission to:-Require funeral homes to post their prices online-Ban the use of bait-and-switch pricing on cremation-End the agreement with funeral lobbying groups to keep the names of Funeral Rule-violators out of the public eyeJoin us for an update on this effort, and how it will help your family more easily find arrangements that meet your financial needs The agenda for the meeting is below. Please feel free to join us for the business meeting, especially if you might be interested in joining us as a board member. We are expanding our outreach and education efforts and would welcome fresh minds and fresh input.                  9:15-9:30 a.m. Time to get settled in on Zoom call             9:30-10:00 a.m.  Welcome, Business Meeting and Election of Board of Directors                         10:00 a.m.  Presentation:  “Funeral Consumer Protection” by Josh Slocum The Zoom Link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83424457724 The one tap mobile # is:  +13462487799,,83424457724# We are a 501(c)(4) nonprofit educational organization. Free Continuing Education Webinar - Mental and Emotional Health in Later Years

Register Here Untreated mental health disorders can have a significant impact on older adults, such as social isolation, placement in long-term care facilities and high rates of suicide. Older adults who show signs of having a mental disorder are less likely than younger adults to receive mental health services, and when they do, they are less likely to receive care from a mental health specialist. Professionals play a vital role in helping older clients and their families to recognize mental health disorders and support them in obtaining an evaluation and appropriate treatments.  Join this webinar to learn more about mental and emotional health in later years. Also learn from a guest speaker from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, who will provide tips and resources on recognizing the signs of suicide and on prevention.

Robert retired as Professor Emeritus of Art from Colorado State University at Pueblo, where he taught drawing and Painting for 33 years.  He now maintains two studios, one in Pueblo, CO from October to May, and another in Estes Park, CO from June to September. $10 Adults / $8 Children, Seniors 65+ & Military.
