Be a part of cutting-edge research on healthy brain aging at Colorado State University’s BRAiN Lab!

WHAT ARE THE STUDIES ABOUT?  We are using non-invasive brain imaging (MRI) to understand how certain aspects of brain structure relate to cognitive function and lifestyle.    HOW TO ENROLL?  If you are 20-80 years old, contact Betty Grullon, the Study Coordinator, to leave your contact and check if you are eligible:  betty.grullon@colostate.edu     347-228-3010    WHAT WILL I BE ASKED TO DO?  Eligible participants will be asked to participate in two short sessions at the CSU:  Visit 1 will involve cognitive tests (e.g., memory, mental speed) on iPad, computer, or pen-and-pencil, blood pressure measurement, and questions about your health and demographics  Visit 2 will involve a structural MRI brain scan. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, and does not involve radiation. You will be asked to lie still in the magnet for about 50-min.  Some participants will be asked to wear a device measuring their physical activity for a week.  The total time commitment is 3-5 hours, depending on the study.  WHEN AND WHERE:  The studies are starting now! The first visits will be scheduled in the end of January and continue for the next year or two.  Location: Colorado State University main campus and the Colorado State University Translation Medicine Institute, Fort Collins.    NOTE: participating in our studies requires minimal contact and our team is vaccinated, masked, screened, and will be 6ft apart for most of the time  WHAT DO I GAIN?  Your participation in this study will help us better understand the processes of healthy brain aging, with the goal to help postpone or prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.  You will get reimbursed with $40-65 as an Amazon gift card (amount depends on the type of study/sessions completed) for your time and effort. We will provide you with free parking and an image of your brain.     YOUR SAFETY:  Your participation is voluntary and your data will be kept anonymous and presented only as group results. The study is approved by CSU Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects (protocols #2710 & 2689, RICRO_IRB@mail.colostate.edu). The studies are supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Drawing & Creative Flow: An Art Workshop

Drawing & Creative Flow If your inner child has been wanting to create art, learning to draw is a great place to start. Nearly every child loves to draw, but many of us get socialized out of it around the time we learn to read. That timing is no accident; our culture emphasizes left-brain thinking, which deals with symbols, language and time. When we dwell constantly in the left brain, it's very difficult to access the right brain, and consequently, to transition into that blissful state called "flow" - that timeless, wordless state that makes you feel like you're on vacation. Learning to draw and access the right side of the brain gives us access to flow. It's both joyous and opens the gates to many other forms of art. In this class, Nicolette Toussaint will teach basic drawing techniques by having participants sketch with soft pencils and colored pencils. You will learn about light and shadow and about achieving a full tonal range. In addition, you will learn some helpful techniques for getting that harsh inner critic to shut up. Class 1 - Darks and lights, shape and shadow using black artist's pencils Class 2 - Spatial orientation, drawing upside down, beginning perspective Class 3 - Gestural drawing, line quality, sketching Class 4 - Still life with colored pencils Materials provided; class size limited and registration is required. Please contact Cathy at cclick@basaltlibrary.org to sign up.

Lakewood Cultural Center and Missoula Children’s Theatre present “The Emperor’s New Clothes”

Lakewood Cultural Center and Missoula Children’s Theatre present “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at 1 and 3:30 p.m., Jan. 29 A nationally touring production performed by 50 local students. Watch the Emperor learn about true friendship on Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Missoula Children's Theatre and 50 local students present an original musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen classic “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway. “Dress for success” is good advice that the Emperor takes whole-heartedly, wanting to impress new friends. But where to stop? When the clothes (and other people’s opinions) become more important than the people of the kingdom, trouble brews. To help their beloved Emperor find the way back to his heart, his true friends create an elaborate “birthday suit” for the Emperor to wear for his birthday parade celebration. The Emperor quickly and humbly learns that sometimes less is more! The Missoula Children’s Theatre, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre for nearly 50 years, has fostered developmental life skills in more than a million children. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will play all roles, including the Emperor, ManyPenny and the Money Council, and the royal scholars, jewelers, cobblers, hatters, tailors and silkworms. Students are also cast as assistant directors who aid in rehearsals and essential backstage responsibilities. Families are invited to attend “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at the Lakewood Cultural Center for performances at 1 and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tickets are $12 and are available at 303-987-7845, Lakewood.org/LCCPresents or the Lakewood Cultural Center Box Office, 470 S. Allison Parkway (Wadsworth and West Alameda Avenue). The LCC Presents 2021-2022 season is generously supported by the SCFD, Colorado Creative Industries, National Endowment for the Arts, Sheraton Denver West and the Olive Garden at Belmar. ###

Free Continuing Education Webinar -

Includes one complimentary Continuing Education (CE) credit. To request speech-to-text captioning during this event, please contact us. As humans, we would like to think we have an infinite amount of time on this earth. However, the reality is, our time will eventually run out. For some this is a scary thought, while others find comfort in some version of an afterlife. Regardless of what people think about death, many individuals don’t feel comfortable talking about death, dying and grieving. While talking about death is not easy, end-of-life planning is vital to ensuring that an individual’s wishes are carried out at the end of their life. It is especially important to ensure that proper documentation is in order to ease the burden of decision-making on their loved ones. This webinar will provide information on how professionals can help to prepare older adults and their families for difficult conversations about death, dying and grieving. RSVP HERE
