Insight Colab Theatre presents 4000 Miles

INSIGHT COLAB THEATREpresents4000 MilesbyAmy HerzogDirected by Samantha Saunders July 25 August 4, 2024 Insight Colab Theatre presents 4000 Miles July 25 through August 4, at Vintage Theatre, 1468 Dayton St, Aurora, CO 80010. Performances are Thursday, July 25; Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.   Tickets are $25 - $35 and available at https://insightcolab.square.site/. Student discount information on the site. For more information call 303-437-8917. After suffering a major loss while on a cross-country bike trip, a 21-year-old grandson seeks solace from his feisty 91-year-old grandfather in his West Village apartment. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder, and ultimately reach each other. 4000 Miles looks at how two outsiders find their way in today's world. Director Samantha Saunders states, The all-Asian casting stays in line with our mission of giving opportunities to an under represented demographic and it aligns with the roots of the theatre company. We wanted to explore nontraditional casting for the play and the grandfather/grandson relationship will still discover the generational struggles the play dives into. She went on to say, This play is still different in the sense that it explores the struggle of the old world and the new world coming together and how that can be overcome. I dont believe it is the gender of the family member that is important in this casting but rather the colliding of different life experiences and coming together as a family despite those differences. Amy Herzogs 4000 Miles won the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play and was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Her play Mary Jane, won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play. She was a finalist for the 20122013 and 20162017 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Herzog was also nominated for a 2023 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play for her adaptation of Ibsen's A Doll's House. Newly rebranded, Insight Colab Theatre was previously known as Theatre Esprit Asia (TEA). TEA, founded in 2012, was Southwest Denvers first and only pan Asian American theatre company. Insight Colab Theatre features plays with non-traditional, diverse casting while creating acting workshops to train the new generation of diverse actors along with a writers series to explore identity, race and privilege. https://www.insightcolab.org Insight Colab Theatre4000 MilesA compassionate story of family, love and healing.July 25 Aug 4Thurs., July 25 @ 7:30 p.m.Fri/Sat at 7:30 p.m. and Sat/Sun at 2:00 p.m.$25 - $35https://www.insightcolab.orgFor more information call 303-437-8917.Vintage Theatre, 1468 Dayton St, Aurora, CO 80010

Top 5 Benefits of Choosing Independent Living or Assisted Living for an Aging Adult

When looking into independent living or assisted living communities, it makes perfect sense to be a little apprehensive. The decision to move to a senior living community is a major one. The decision has emotional and physical ramifications, so there are a variety of factors to think about.According toa 2010 study conducted by Age Wave and Genworth Financial, the primary motivations for someone to consider assisted living and independent living apartments for seniors are:They don't want to be a burden on their family physically or financially. They want to make their own decisions about where and how they live. They want to safeguard future security and quality of life for themselves and for their family members. So, what benefits do residential communities have for older adults? How do apartments with assisted living amenities let them meet those goals? Here are five benefits of Senior Living for aging adults, including options for Independent Living (IL), Assisted Living (AL), and Assisted Living with Memory Care (MC)under one roof:1. Ease the Pressure of Caregiving on Your Spouse and Other Loved OnesThe biggest concern for us as we age? Being a burden on our family. Some 55% of respondents to the Age Wave survey said that burdening loved ones with their care is their single greatest worry. Residents at a high-quality assisted living community like the Tribute communities managed by Cadence Living don't have that worry. Thats because the Assisted Living Neighborhoods within Cadence communities are staffed by qualified personnel who are in tune with your unique needs, providing personalized care so your family doesn't have to.Tributes assisted living services include, among others:Assistance with medication management on a set scheduleCoordinating medical services and on-site doctor visitsHousekeeping and laundryTransportation support with an on property personal shuttleAssistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL)BathingDressingGrooming and hygieneGetting to and returning from meals and social activities (as needed)2. The Assistance You Need. The Independence You Want As we age, it becomes even more important to maintain our independence, make our own decisions, and live life on our terms. Thats exactly what a good center for independent living offers to senior citizens. Independent living communities make life easier for older adults. When chores like meal preparation and housekeeping are taken care of along with coordination of medical needs. This means residents have more time to engage with neighbors, participate in community activities, and live Life In the Key of Beautiful. One advantage of a senior living community like Tribute is enjoying the benefits of assisted living and independent living services at the same time. Whenever they wish, residents are free to lock their apartment door and head out, knowing that those amenities and services will be there when they get back.A Tribute community is a place where residents can put themselves first maybe for the first time in recent memory!3. Access to Advanced Memory Care Services When NeededAccording to the Age Wave study, the most-feared disease of aging is Alzheimer's. Thats why the availability of memory care services is a significant factor when looking at apartments for assisted living. And that's another advantage of Cadences Tribute living: Within many of our senior communities for assisted living, memory care services are available on-site through our Revere Memory Care program.Memory care is a key part of life at Cadence Livings Tribute communities. Revere Memory Care is a holistic engagement of the body, mind and spirit for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia. Using stimuli like music, dance, natural surroundings and sensory experiences, the Revere Memory Care program helps residents stave off cognitive decline and dementia.4. Entertain Guests and Welcome Family in a Beautiful Home of Your OwnThere nothing like the comforts of your own home especially when you're not taking care of it all. Residents of assisted living apartments don't have to worry about deep-cleaning carpets, mowing the lawn, doing laundry, or preparing meals. But they can still make themselves at home, decorating their apartments to suit their tastes making it a comfortable, familiar place for family and friends to visit. The emotional toll of leaving a home you may have custom built or in which you raised a family can be heavy. But moving into an assisted living apartment can also allow you to distill down to the belongings that are most important to you. Some even find it liberating to be able to choose exactly what they're taking into this new chapter of their life and will even add a new flatscreen TV or mattress to the moving experience to make it more exciting. Whatever your situation, you'll still find the comfort of home within the community, and you'll have the benefit of helping hands as well as opportunities to socialize.5. Enjoy Life in a Community Designed for Your NeedsFrom holistic activities to handrails, every aspect of life in Tributes independent living retirement communities has been built with residents' comfort, convenience, health, happiness, and camaraderie in mind.In Cadence Livings Tribute communities, the rhythm of our community is paramount. We support the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of older adults through our integrated SYMPHONY program, including positive experiences like:In-Tune FitnessENCORE CuisineAria ArtsCadence ChoirBackstage at CadenceSESSIONS Life EnrichmentYoga and exerciseArts and craftsBook clubsCultural eventsSpecial celebrationsPerhaps the best perk about senior living communities is sharing memories and laughs with people from your generation.

Vascular Dementia

In our continuing series on Alzheimer's and Dementia, this month we briefly explore vascular dementia. Also referred to as multi-infarct dementia, vascular dementia is caused by cerebrovascular problems, either by one large stroke or a series of small strokes. According to some estimates, vascular dementia may account for as many as 20 percent of the total number of all dementia cases. While vascular dementia occurs when stroke restricts blood flow to the brain, not all people with stroke will develop this type of dementia. The symptoms of vascular dementia vary depending on what region of the brain is affected. See the List on the right for common symptoms.Vascular dementia shares risk factors for stroke, including smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Average life expectancy depends on the type and severity of the stroke.Because vascular dementia often goes unrecognized, many experts recommend professional cognitive screening for everyone considered to be at high risk, including those who have had a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a ministroke, or who have risk factors for heart or blood vessel disease. Professional screening for depression is also recommended for high-risk groups.Depression commonly coexists with brain vascular disease and can contribute to cognitive impairment.LEARN MOREVascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/STR.0b013e3182299496Mixed Dementia: https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/what-is-dementia/types-of-dementia/mixed-dementia

Senior Vision Loss Signs and Prevention Methods

There are a number of conditions that become more likely and common as we get older, and one of these is vision loss. Vision issues tend to become more common and significant with age, but there are also ways to prepare for and even prevent certain forms of vision loss with the right approachAt Avamere at Mountain Ridge, were proud to offer care for a variety of medical conditions as part of our assisted living community, and weve assisted many of our guests who have vision issues in the past. If youre a senior or caregiver looking to manage or even prevent certain vision loss issues, heres a brief primer on the signs to watch out for, the risks of vision changes, and some basic ways to protect the eyes.Signs and Symptoms of Senior Vision LossHere are some of the common signs or symptoms of vision loss that may be present in some seniors:Cloudy or tunnel visionStraining to read small printed wordsExcessive tearing in the eyesSudden changes in eyeglass prescriptionsProblems with night visionBlurred visionAny sudden change in vision, whether temporary or permanent, warrants a visit to the eye doctor. This is for several reasons, including the fact that vision loss among older adults may speak to certain related conditions that are taking place. More on this below.Connection to Other IssuesIn some cases, vision changes or losses can be warning signs that strokes or other neurological issues are possible. Here are a few examples:If vision is lost in one or both eyes extremely abruptly, this could be a negative signIf double or blurry vision comes on suddenlyRapid or uncontrolled eye movementSudden sharp pain in or behind one or both eyesIf any of these events takes place for you or a senior loved one, call 911 right away.Eye Protection MethodsWhile certain elements of vision loss are simply natural and cant be entirely prevented, there are also some steps you can take to protect your eyes as you get older and in many cases, these will limit or ward off the risks of vision loss for at least a few years, if not longer. Some basic tips:Wear sunglasses regularly: This is for a number of reasons, but one of the most significant is that it keeps harmful UV light from the sun from damaging the eye tissue directly. In fact, some recent studies have suggested that sunglasses can be as protective as sunscreen for the eyes.Eat properly: Diet plays a major role in overall eye health, so make sure to include plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other nutrients that support the eyes.Routine eye examinations: Especially if the senior in question has any personal or family history of vision loss, its important to get regular checkups from an eye doctor. This will help to detect any potential problems early on.For more on identifying and managing vision loss issues in seniors, or to learn about any of our assisted living or memory care community programs, speak to the caring staff with Avamere at Mountain Ridge today.
