Senior Health Concern – Hoarding

Hoarders, clutterers, pack rats, and collectors are a few terms used to describe people with a lot of items in their home, office, car, storage unit, and maybe overflowing into the yard.  The accumulation of objects can become a safety and health problem, often interferes with daily living and/or violation of housing codes that can lead to eviction or homelessness.  It can be difficult to know if a loved one is truly hoarding or merely attached to their personal possessions. According to a study published in Journal of Affective Disorders, about 2.5% of the general population falls into the criteria for hoarding disorder.[1]  Hoarding behaviors often emerge during adolescence or early adulthood, and tend to worsen with age. Hoarding behavior may focus on items such as books, papers, clothing, and even pets. The reasons why someone begins hoarding are not fully understood according to the National Health Service.  Mental health problems such as depression, psychotic disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been associated with hoarding. Other possible reasons for hoarding may be associated with self-neglect such as living alone, family history of hoarding, and growing up in a cluttered home environment.Hoarding can create significant health and safety risks for older adults. Clutter can cause falls or fire hazards. The inability to access the kitchen can lead to problems with nutrition and food contamination. Medication is easily lost. In addition, there are infestations of insects and rodents.Hoarders are emotionally attached to their belongings and lack the ability to set priorities and make informed decisions. People who hoard can comprise their own safety and relationships just because they are afraid to throw anything away. If a family member or loved one is experiencing hoarding tendencies, contact a general practitioner or mental health professional. In many communities, public health agencies can help address problems of hoarding and get help for individuals affected.[1]  Postlethwaite A, Kellet S, Mataix-Cols D. Prevalence of Hoarding Disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Journal of Affective Disorders. 2019 Jun. doi.org/10.1016/j.jad.2019.06.004.

Are you ready to start your next chapter at a senior living community?

For more information on the author, American House Sarasota, CLICK HERE!Contemplating a move to a senior living community can seem difficult or overwhelming. Despite the benefits and appealing lifestyle of senior living, you or your loved one might still be asking the question, Am I ready? The truth is, most retirees find relocating to a senior community is one of the best decisions they've ever made. Todays communities offer beautifully-designed apartments with spacious floorplans, resort-style accommodations, and a number of social activities. The safety and security of a senior living community can also provide peace of mind.Whether you're active and independent or need some assistance with daily tasks, here are few signs that you may be ready for the move:You feel like your home is too much work and your yard isn't as neat as it could be.You would rather have chauffeured transportation. You would enjoy attending more social events and outings.Going to the grocery store feels too stressful. You're not eating as much as you used too, cooking feels like to much of a task and you have expired food in the house.Your laundry is piling up.Caring for your pet is difficult. Its hard to keep up with bills and open mail in a timely manner.Managing your medications is stressful.' You worry about falling or injuring yourself in your home.Dressing and bathing are becoming increasingly difficult. If you've agreed with any of these statements, or you've made the decision that you're ready, you may question the next steps. Do your research! Visit your local communities, talk with residents, and attend events. What are some of the benefits of senior living at American House? You can sell the lawnmower: Love the look of a well-manicured lawn, but hate doing the work it takes to keep it that way? Join the club. Many senior living communities have beautifully-landscaped grounds which include walking paths and tranquil gardens. No need to worry about shoveling snow, raking leaves or watering the lawn we've got that covered.Transportation issues are a thing of the past: Even active seniors sometimes find themselves stuck at home when reliable transportation is unavailable. However, most senior living communities provide transportation, free of charge. Whether going on an outing with friends and neighbors, picking up a few items from the grocery store, or seeing your physician for a follow-up visit, transportation personnel can assist you.Like a hotel only better: Too much house and not enough help? Many senior living communities offer services like housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. You'll never have to worry about folding fitted sheets or changing the furnace filter again.Restaurant-style dining every day: No need to thaw out that one chicken breast hiding in the back of the icebox for two months. Enjoy a healthy, delicious meal, prepared by the community's chef, every day of the week. Bonus: You'll never have to eat alone. There's never a dull moment :If you live alone, you may understand how isolating it can be. After moving to a senior living community, many retirees discover new interests, take up old ones or develop friendships with neighbors. Scheduled outings, live entertainment, fitness classes and other social gatherings can be a mood booster for seniors suffering from loneliness.Access to care: For many seniors and their families, the thought of an accident, no matter how minor, is cause for concern. While not all seniors require assistance, would'nt it be good to know you have access to a team of health care providers should you need them? Progressive care, a concept that allows a person to remain in his or her current environment, despite the physical and/or mental changes that may occur during the aging process, is one that has been adopted by many senior living communities, providing the peace of mind that seniors and their families need. Senior living has changed drastically over the years; maybe its time you contemplated if settling in at a senior living community is the right move for you.

Encore entrepreneurs over 50 possess a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help get the business off the ground. This blog outlines the benefits of becoming an entrepreneur at an older age.Why Should You Become An Entrepreneur At An Older Age?There are several reasons why becoming an entrepreneur at an older age can be a good idea. Here are some reasons to consider:1. Wealth of experienceOlder entrepreneurs often possess an invaluable wealth of experience from their past jobs and personal lives, giving them the wisdom and confidence to take risks, seek new opportunities and make sound decisions. With knowledge of past successes and failures and a greater understanding of the marketplace and industry dynamics, they have insight into what strategies and approaches may yield results and benefit their businesses. They may also be better equipped to manage myriad tasks, build trust and develop relationships with customers, partners, and vendors while maintaining operations. Ultimately, such experience can give them a competitive edge.2. Established financial stabilityOlder entrepreneurs often capitalize on the financial stability they have built up over time. Through long-term savings, investments, and retirement plans, those who start businesses later in life have the means to reduce their risk in the form of financial security. They are more prepared to fund their endeavors without needing to rely on external sources of capital, allowing them to focus more on business execution rather than financing. This protected position gives older entrepreneurs the freedom to take calculated risks and invest in their businesses without worrying about financial missteps.3. Desire for purposeStarting a business can provide a new sense of purpose and allow someone to impact the world positively. Entrepreneurship is a great way to set long-term goals, learn new skills, and make a difference in the lives of others. It can also provide fulfilling personal and financial rewards, such as financial freedom, decision-making satisfaction, and generating passive income by building a business. With an older age, one could also gain an array of valuable experience and resources that prove extremely useful for the venture's success.Franchising Guidelines/OpportunitiesFranchising provides the perfect opportunity for entrepreneurs to leverage the strengths of an existing business model and expand their business venture. Franchisees benefit from extensive support, brand recognition, established systems, and exclusive trademark rights. With the right approach and guidance, franchising can be a low-risk and rewarding way to start a business at any age. Here are several guidelines and opportunities a franchisee should consider when deciding to become an entrepreneur at an older age:1. Research: It is important to research the franchisor and its business model, including track record, financials, legal obligations, and other relevant factors.2. Financing: Look into financing options, such as loans or investment partners, to cover the upfront costs of franchising.3. Legal obligations: Consider the legal and financial implications of entering into a franchise agreement, such as all payments due, fees, disclosure rules, and agreement termination.Theres never a wrong time to start being an entrepreneur. In fact, doing so later in life could give you a competitive edge your younger counterparts might now have. So take what makes you passionate and find out how to turn your hobbies into something that yields all kinds of rewards!
