Senior Safety at Home: Creating a Secure Living Environment

Ensuring the safety of seniors at home is paramount for their well-being and independence. Creating a secure living environment involves a comprehensive approach that addresses various aspects of their daily life. Begin by conducting a thorough assessment of the home, identifying potential hazards such as loose rugs, uneven flooring, or cluttered pathways. Installing handrails in key areas, such as staircases and bathrooms, can provide valuable support and prevent accidents. Adequate lighting throughout the house is crucial; consider motion-activated lights to illuminate pathways and rooms, reducing the risk of falls. Additionally, make necessary modifications in the kitchen, such as lowering countertop heights for easier access and installing nonslip flooring to enhance traction. Regular communication with seniors about their comfort and safety concerns is essential, fostering a collaborative effort in maintaining a secure home environment.Incorporating technology into the home can also significantly contribute to senior safety. Smart home devices, such as medical alert systems or sensors that detect unusual movements, can provide an added layer of security. Consider implementing a video monitoring system to keep an eye on key areas of the home, providing both caregivers and seniors with peace of mind. By addressing these physical and technological aspects, we can create an environment that not only promotes the independence of seniors but also assures their safety, allowing them to age in place with confidence and dignity.

Dental Visits for Better Overall Health

Going to the dentist is so much more than your smile. Today more than ever before, we know that your oral health affects every system of your body.Regular 3, 4, or 6 month preventative maintenance dental appointments are as necessary as a seniors oral homecare for your teeth. But, we also now know that it has become medically necessary to see your dentist on a regular basis to help prevent serious health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or pancreatic cancer. Yes, that's right your technically advanced dentist can help you with much more today than ever before. And that is why most seniors see their dentist more often than they see their medical doctor. For example did you know that when there is periodontal disease present, a senior is at a much higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, and compromise of other systems of the body. The cardio system and hormonal system are all affected as the infection flows into the bloodstream.Todays dentist, using the ORAL DNA TEST specifically alerts a patient to having periodontal disease. The test evaluates 11 different bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Then the bacteria that the patient has can be specifically targeted. It is a simple swish/saliva test that takes about 5 minutes. As soon as the lab results return, the dentist and the patient know exactly which bacteria are causing the problem and whether they are at a high risk level. If its above a certain threshold, it can be treated with specific medications and Laser Periodontal Therapy (with no shots and drilling). Keep in mind that decay is a bacterial infection and it does not go away -- it just keeps eating away at the tooth. Coming to your very important maintenance appointment allows the dentist to detect any decay early before it becomes a bigger and more costly problem. With all the new technologies here, and on the horizon, the time for procrastination is past. So, the next time you think about putting that dental appointment off, remember the vital role your dentist plays in your plan to stay healthy and keep smiling for many years to come.Editors note: This article was submitted by the Couchman Center for Complete Dentistry. Preventing Bad Breath for Patients in Colorado Springs

Have you ever noticed people taking a step back the moment you opened your mouth to talk? If you have, then its probably due to halitosis or more commonly known as bad breath, which can be super embarrassing for anyone. Preventing bad breath is challenging. Unfortunately, there is no one cure for treating halitosis but there are many ways in which you can reduce the amount of smell that comes from your mouth. In order to find solutions on how to treat bad breath, you should be aware of some of the causes of bad breath. Here are some of the main causes of bad breath:Excessive amounts of bacteria in the mouth.Foods with strong odors.Drinking alcohol and smokingDry mouthWearing BracesBad Breath TreatmentWell now that you know why and how bad breath is caused, lets learn how to treat bad breath. If you follow these steps on a daily basis, you should be fine! If you still need some help then feel free to call the office of Dr. Guerra. Practice Good Oral Hygiene on a Daily Basis Brushing and flossing twice a day are the most important oral hygiene practices you should be following. If you have questions on what type of toothbrush you should be using or need tips on brushing and flossing the right way, then call our office so we can assist you. Not practicing good oral hygiene can lead to oral health problems such as gingivitis, which can cause bad breath. Mouth Wash for Additional Help with CleaningOnce youve brushed and flossed, feel free to use a mouth wash (i.e. Listerine) for extra defense against bacteria and plaque buildup. If you wear braces, then using a mouthwash can ensure that any food particles youve missed while brushing and flossing get washed out from in between the brackets and wires. Clean Your TongueCleaning your tongue can always be another great way to prevent bad odors that come from your mouth. Using your toothbrush to clean your tongue or a tongue scraper can help with preventing bad breath. No matter what method you use, both can be helpful in preventing plaque buildup.Staying Hydrated is KeyDrinking water not only helps prevent bacteria but also helps your mouth generate more saliva which can help to clean out bacteria. Plus staying hydrated is good for your body and overall health. Drinking water after you eat can help with cleaning your teeth, especially if youre not able to brush your teeth right away. A Healthy DietLastly, a good healthy diet is important not just for your teeth but for your overall body. Making sure that your diet consists of healthy nutrients is good for keeping your body and teeth healthy and strong. Eating foods that are high in sugar can cause tooth decay as well as cavities. Plus, with too much sugar in your mouth, it can stick to your teeth and also cause bad breath, especially if you dont brush or rinse your mouth soon afterward. So, next time you go grocery shopping, be sure and check the back of the box and see how much sugar is in your food.Should you have questions or need more information about halitosis (bad breath), please call Guerra Dental so a member of our team can help you. Dont forget to call our office (719. 596.1230) to schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning!
