Some Things Never Age

The spirit can be so resilient. At a recent Beauty Pageant (where the average age of the contestant was 86), I was reminded of a time past and the glitter of young girls, the spark of high heeled shoes, and the sassy competitiveness of my wife when I first met her. That elusive, difficult to define, but ever present spirit that defines the human condition does not wither when provided an environment that keeps it vibrant and, well youthful. There is a renewed focus on the spirit in forward looking Communities of Care, most commonly referred to as assisted living facilities, for our elders. Yes, the food still has to be good. The environment should be safe, clean, filled with light and objects of beauty. The Community should demonstrate a sense of caring, respect, love and compassion for those who built our schools, built our parks, raised us from childhood to parenthood; who won our wars and who ran our towns and cities. Through these and many other accomplishments they earned our respect and admiration and deserve our utmost care. But that is just the beginning.Fundamentally, none of that special and increased level of care would happen unless there was a deep and abiding understanding from the leadership to the line staff. Some have discovered, and many more are now also learning, that at the very heart of what providers do every day in these Communities of Care, there needs to be a consistent and fundamental appreciation of, and connectedness with, our shared humanity our shared spirit.I've told my children, when I'm old and bedridden, and I can no longer manage to coordinate the subtle muscles from mind to mouth, that would allow me to answer their every question, or join them in conversation, that they never assume I'm not fully there and listening to every word. The lotus of our humanity is our consciousness, and our consciousness is the lotus of our spirituality. That spirit remains young when surrounded by attention and respect.Editors Note: This article was submitted by Robin Avery, Gerontologist and CEO of the Retreat Communities. Aging Gracefully

What is my ideal environment? Most people would prefer to stay in their own home and in many cases that is the best and most affordable option; here are things to consider:Is the home safe or can it be made safe? The bathroom is a high risk environment where most falls occur. Install grab bars, improve lighting throughout the home and consider other modifications. Can I manage the household with or without help? The cooking, cleaning, laundry and yard work in addition to my own personal care needs. If you do need help consider a homemaker service to help with household chores. Home health care can ensure a smooth transition helping you learn to manage a mobility challenge; an Occupational Therapist can evaluate the risks and make recommendations. The availability of home delivered meals can be one of the most important factors in keeping elders at home.I am afraid of being alone. Consider the option of senior housing, retirement or assisted living. These options often have varied service packages designed to change with your needs. Many seniors find this option more palatable than a nursing home.Is there a program that can provide more support at home? Home and Community Based Services and Program of All Inclusive Care are both programs designed to provide a high level of support in the community. Both programs can provide homecare, home modifications, life lines, meals, medical transportation and medication assistance. The PACE program also provides healthcare, an adult day center, therapy, recreation, nutrition, transportation and social workers.Because of my condition I need nursing care. It may be time to consider a skilled nursing facility where 24 hour nursing care is provided. Todays facilities generally provide resident centered care which means they allow the residents to self direct many of the care decisions, this means you tell them what time you would like to get up in the morning, what time of day you prefer showers and what your food preferences are. This level of care can help keep you safe and as healthy as possible when illness or injury have made it difficult for you to care for yourself.Editors note: This article was submitted by Volunteers of America offering a continuum of care in Montrose and Delta Counties. Introduction to Certified Aging in Place Specialist

The Certified Aging-in Place Specialist (CAPS) designation was developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in collaboration with the AARP. This program was developed to provide professional training that would enable them to accommodate the needs of people over the age of 50, as well as the knowledge they would need to modify their homes for aging in place. The program focuses specifically on the customer service skills, technical information and business management training needed to properly serve the needs of older adults. In laymen's terms, a CAPS certified professional has trained on the unique needs of seniors, modifying homes so someone can live there longer as they age and addressing the most common barriers in a home.Choosing a CAPS professional is always the right choice for an aging-in-place remodeling project or new home construction for those seniors building the home they want to age in. These professionals have taken part in a training and certification process through the National Association of Home Builders which prepares them to anticipate and meet the needs of older people. Through the use of universal design principles, CAPS professionals can work with you to create a safe, comfortable and more independent life in your home; both now and for the future. But, it doesn't stop with addressing design. CAPS professionals are trained in common remodeling projects and costs, accessibility issues, product recommendations, codes and standards, and the process and resources needed to provide a complete aging in place solution. When you use the services of a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, you can rest assured that this person has been reliably instructed on how to craft solutions that meet the needs of seniors. To find a Certified Aging in Place Specialist in your area call 1-800-368-5242 or the Grand Junction HBA office at 245-0253.Editors Note: This article was submitted by Randy DiDonato, owner of Tile Meister and a CAPS Professional.
