Health Care Crisis Control

So, lets for a moment imagine a health care crisis that brings out the best in a tough situation.  What might that look like?  Or, better yet what COULD that look like?  Does this crisis need to be bad?  Can good come out of this?  If so, how?  I am not sure if these are thoughts that are common when experiencing a health care crisis, but they could be.  Can this balance be obtained?  The answer is yes.  If effective strategies can be demonstrated prior to any health care crisis and practiced there is a chance that a better outcome even in a difficult situation can be achieved.First, identify the team.  Who will be responsible for speaking in a crisis and make sure everyone involved in speaking on your behalf has a backup.  Second, review all resources for access.  Resources are considered assets.  Anything that is of value such as your Home and financial resources.  This is a sample of the pre planning thought process that can make a difference.  More often than not a common crisis that is planned for in society is a fire or flood which usually ends up being called an emergency.  You have insurance that covers your home burning down and flood insurance if you are in a flood zone.  Health care provides the same but in most cases people will know their insurance deductible on a vehicle or home before a health insurance deductible or how the insurance performs.  When you get in an accident with your vehicle you know how to report it to the police, file a claim with your agent and get a bid on the work that needs to be completed to repair the vehicle if possible.  If someone damages your home or a weather event occurs you know to contact your agent and go over what is needed.  When buying auto and home policies most folks understand the policy.A health care crisis does not wait for you to have paid the same attention to your health insurance that you did for your auto and homeowners insurance.  Do you call your Medicare or Private Insurer when a health care crisis appears?  The stakes are higher and so are the bills in most cases.  Without a plan, or understanding of resources available the crisis becomes chaotic and overwhelming very quickly.  It is in these moments that your planning or lack of will set the course for the outcome.  I believe that at first diagnosis of any health concern is when the timer should begin on getting organized.  Lets face it no one thinks this way because it is depressing and sad.  To plan for an emergency is easier than that of a loved one or yourself suffering from poor health or an accident.  A health care crisis demands our full attention on many levels.  The stress can be reduced by having the team conversations and access.I have worked on strategies to take full advantage of your options when creating a plan.  I have seen families come together and work together creating a working environment no matter the severity of the matter.  I believe that being proactive is better than being reactive in a health care crisis.  I feel that when we drive a vehicle, we are prepared for anything happening and the expectation of accessing insurance.  Health care should be just as organized.  I can help you understand this approach and guide you to a better understanding of how you should approach your Home and Health Financial Future!

Explaining the Costs and Benefits of Respite Care

If your senior loved one needs in-home support, you may initially take on the responsibilities yourself. However, stress and fatigue can quickly arise when you also juggle multiple roles, including career and family obligations. Caregiver burnout is significant and has many consequences. One way to preserve your physical and emotional well-being is through respite care services.A respite care professional provides temporary relief from overwhelming caregiving tasks and responsibilities. The support affords you the extra time to address personal needs, spend quality time with your immediate family, run errands, or take a breather. Respite Care BenefitsVisiting Angels' professional home care services, both full-time and part-time, can offer you a much-deserved break if you manage personal and work duties while supporting an elderly loved one. Experienced in-home caregivers can provide the following benefits:Maintain your well-beingTaking time to look after your needsincluding health, exercise, and social interactionwill help you look after your loved one and give them the dedicated attention they require. Reduce frustration and burnoutFeeling frustrated or burnt out from time to time is perfectly normal, and you may need to step away and recharge. Visiting Angels can focus on your senior's needs so you can do something for yourself, such as going to lunch with a friend, taking a walk, going to an exercise class, meditating, attending a religious service, or reading a book.Schedule times to meet your needsWhen you hire Visiting Angels, you can choose the days, times, and the number of hours that fit your schedule and meet your loved one's needs. Whether it's a few hours a week temporarily, a long-term arrangement for a few days a month, or a specified period of time, such as a week-long work trip or vacation, the scheduled times are up to you. Help with everyday tasksIn addition to providing personal care for seniors, in-home services can help with light housekeeping tasks around the home so you can return to your normal activities without facing a backlog of laundry, housework, or errands.Avoid Senior IsolationRespite care can also help your senior maintain social skills by allowing them to interact with someone else in a safe and supportive environment. Professional companions can help seniors' complete daily tasks, such as light housework, meal preparation, and routines or they offer companion care.Provide peace of mindWhen your mom or dad is with a Visiting Angels' professional caregiver, you know they're in good hands so that you can focus on personal or family needs. How Much Does Respite Care Cost?A "one size fits all" approach does not apply to respite care. The cost can vary depending on where your loved one resides, the necessary support, and how often you use services. Average respite cost ranges include:Facility-based respite servicesRespite services in an assisted living facility may cost an average of $200 or more daily, depending on the support needed. Some facilities may require a minimum stay of several nights or days, and availability may be limited. Although an assisted living facility is a good option, you will need to arrange transportation to and from the facility and pack personal belongings for the duration of stay. Also, if your loved one is living with dementia, the change of environment may trigger increased confusion or agitation.Community-based respite careAdult day services, sometimes called "adult day care," can be cost-effective for family members who need support during the day. Some programs accept Medicaid or other insurance coverage and may charge sliding-scale fees based on income. Expenses can range from $50-$125 a day. Home-based respite careIntermittent personal assistance typically costs $35-$50 per hour, depending on where you live. Some providers may charge a reduced hourly rate for more routine services on a weekly or monthly schedule or if you schedule support for an entire weekend or 24-hour period. Does Insurance Cover Respite Care? While many health insurance plans don't cover costs for respite care, there are long-term care plans that may offer assistance. If your loved one doesn't have long-term coverage, any charges not covered by insurance or other sources would need to be paid. In most cases, Medicare does not pay for long-term care, but there are some instances where it may cover respite services for you and your loved one. State Medicaid may fund some forms of respite, depending in which state you reside. Also, the Department of Veterans Affairs may have options if your loved one is a veteran. Contact Visiting AngelsTake the first step by learning more through a free home care consultation. Pueblo Long-Term Ombudsman Program

What is the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program? The Pueblo Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for residents of skilled nursing homes, and licensed assisted living residences. The authority of the long-term care ombudsman program comes from the Older Americans Act, as well as from the Older Coloradans Act. The primary purpose of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is to promote and protect the residents rights guaranteed these residents under federal and state law. We achieve this mission with a network of local offices across the state, which recruit, train, and manage teams of certified ombudsmen. Staff and volunteer ombudsmen visit long-term care facilities throughout the state to ensure residents rights are being upheld. Certified Long-Term Care Ombudsmen are trained to receive complaints and resolve problems in situations involving quality of care, use of restraints, transfer and discharge, abuse, and other aspects of resident dignity and rights. Ombudsman services are free, confidential and resident directed. Who Can Use the Ombudsman Program? Did You Know...

New studies have linked prolonged hearing loss with cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's. It makes sense when you consider these facts:1 in 10 Americans experience some degree of hearing loss.Hearing loss can affect people of all ages varying from mild to profound.By the age of 65, 1 out of 3 people has a hearing loss.Hearing loss may be mistaken for aloofness, confusion, personality changes or dementia.Hearing loss is the 3rd most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease.Tinnitus (or ringing in the ears) can accompany hearing loss and may be as debilitating as hearing loss.Because we hear with our brains, untreated hearing loss can lead to cognitive difficulties and increase the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimers. It is commonly accepted that brain exercises such as puzzles and Sudoku can help to keep our brain sharp. Now, the research from "Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care, an article in the Lancet Commissions, July 20, 2017, demonstrates that better hearing can help our brains stay healthier and sharper as well.Although most people experience some hearing loss as they get older, they tend to wait approximately 10 years before getting help. We can see now that 10 years is too long to wait. During those years, communication becomes more difficult resulting in an increased isolation from conversations and interaction with loved ones. The findings emphasize just how important being proactive is in addressing any hearing loss we may have. One reason people wait is that hearing loss tends to progress slowly and is often hard to recognize until it becomes extreme. A simple complimentary hearing exam is essential in promoting healthy hearing. It can help detect hearing loss early enough so your Audiologist is able to treat it successfully, preventing or reducing the likelihood of physical, mental and social health complications from affecting your quality of life.Be proactive, get your hearing tested today.Editors Note: This article was submitted by Dr. Renee Hadad Cichon. Gym Memberships and Medicare

This month with KKTV we discussed gym memberships and Medicare. Lyndsey Pouncey of the YMCA joined us in discussing what the YMCA and the Senior Center of Colorado Springs have to offer to Seniors and how to gain access at no cost with your Medicare plan.Medicare plans with gym membershipsA lot of Medicare plans now offer free gym memberships as a part of their benefits package. These free gym memberships come in a variety of names, but if your plan offers a free gym membership the end result is the same. you get to go to a gym at no cost, such as the YMCA and the Senior Center of Colorado Springs.Medicare plans such as Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) or Medicare Supplement plans provide these gym memberships. If you are unsure if your current Medicare plan is providing the free gym membership benefit, give our office a call and we can let you know if you have access or let you know how to get access. Many beneficiaries on Medicare do not even realize what benefits actually are a part of the plan they chose, let alone if there is a free gym membership included. So, do not feel alone if you are unsure what benefits your Medicare plan is providing to you. That is what our offices in Southern Colorado are here for. With our local offices you can schedule reviews of your plan options and benefit reviews to ensure you take advantage of everything that is available in your area at no cost. We can also let you know what gyms are near you that will allow you to utilize your no cost membership benefit.YMCA and the Senior CenterThe YMCA and the Senior Center of Colorado Springs were able to join us this month for KKTV to go over some of the great benefits their buildings provide. If you have not been to a YMCA recently it is definitely worth the trip. The YMCA is providing daily Silver Sneaker programs, group exercises, pool therapy, racquetball games, cycling, and much more. They are very involved with the community and try to provide as much resources as possible to the senior community. There are several YMCA buildings around Southern Colorado that provide a ton of senior oriented services. Take a look at the local YMCA locations and join one today at no cost with your free gym membership!Veterans and Free Gym MembershipsVeterans with VA access or Tricare for Life do not get a gym membership (unless you want to go to the base with all the trainees) included with their coverage benefits when they get Medicare. HealthCare coverage with Tricare and service-connected veterans can be top-notch, but when it comes to some of the ancillary benefits such as a free gym membership the government is not providing it.The great thing is there are plans available for Veterans that provide the gym membership benefits, along with many other benefits. If you have not had a chance to review your Medicare & Tricare or VA access coverage, then you should reach out to us because you are missing out on benefits that you are eligible for. We know it can seem daunting and seem too good to be true, but there are plans available for Veterans that do not affect the government provided HealthCare to enhance the benefits provided.Thank you to KKTV 11 ConnectsWe are very happy to be a part of the KKTV 11 connects family and to be able to provide these valuable interviews with them. If you have not had a chance to take a look at what KKTV 11 connects is doing in the community, take a look at KKTV 11 connects page. We look forward to next months interview and hope you will enjoy it. (Get excited: we will be joined by a great person, helping an organization do great things for those with Alzheimers- can you guess who it is, or what organization?)As always if you have any more questions, you are more than welcome to reach out to our office and talk with one of your local Medicare Brokers. We have several offices throughout Southern Colorado. You can call us directly at 719-404-3202Or navigate to our contact page and we can reach out to you.
